With the recent repeat of the black lace Temperley gown, many W&C followers are questioning: Why does Kate repeat outfits?
Speculation into her closet leads us to wonder why someone with the wallet, connections, body and fashion sense of a princess would show up on the red carpet wearing something we’ve seen before.
We have noticed that Kate does this wisely. She doesn’t repeat “epic outfits,” – like her blue Issa wrap dress, the blue lace Erdem that everyone fawns over, or the glittery Jenny Packham that sparkled in the London sunshine.

For the most part, she repeats classic pieces. The black lace Temperley gown was (okay, this is a stretch) her “little black dress,” and with a $6,000 price tag it’s only responsible to wear it more than once. The black and white circle print Zara dress is a closet staple, and Kate accessorized it differently every time. In fact, every time she repeats, she changes her shoes, bag, jewelry, and/or hairstyle. She keeps the look fresh and interesting.
Sometimes, we see the same jacket or suit from Catherine. Her repeats of jackets, blazers, and suiting sets are common for fashionistas – these are classic pieces required for a great wardrobe. I have a blue navy suit that I would wear to every big business event if I could. It makes me feel confident and pulled together, and I’m sure Kate feels the same about her Smythe blazer or her Rebecca Taylor tweed ensemble.

The Duchess of Cambridge has also been seen repeating coats during the colder season. Upon reflection, I realized – I only own four fashionable coats. On top of that, I own maybe 2 “weatherproof” winter jackets. And for most of the events where Kate breaks out a coat for her ensemble, it’s quite necessary. So I ask, how many coats do we expect her to purchase?
Kate invests in quality pieces, often without succumbing to trends. This makes her closet timeless and ageless – we may see the same Philip Treacy hat again in 2015. When we think with a level head (and I often do not), we might realize that Kate makes the same outfit decisions that we do. We break out our favorite LBD for a fancy event, we wear our favorite lucky sweater when we feel nervous about an outfit, or we stick to our incredibly comfortable LK Bennett Sledge pumps.
The Duchess repeats outfits the same way we all do. After all, she’s only human.
