While the rest of us were winding down for the week, Kate was gearing up to host some of her most important guests to date. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with Prince Harry hosted American President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama for dinner at Kensington Palace earlier this evening.
Duchess Catherine and Prince William have a cordial relationship with the Obamas, having met the First Couple shortly after their wedding. They rubbed shoulders again at the opening ceremonies for the 2012 London Olympics, and Prince William popped down to Washington for the day to meet with President Obama during the couple’s trip to New York in late 2014. Prince Harry paid a visit to the Obamas last fall while in the United States to promote the upcoming Invictus Games. Most recently, the First Lady publicly praised Duchess Kate for her passionate efforts to effect change in the area of mental health care.
The Royal Trio greeted the President and First Lady amid a light drizzle on the steps of Kensington Palace. The press call continued inside, allowing some glimpses into the recently-renovated Apartment 1A.
Royal watchers who were on the edges of their seats in anticipation of tonight’s engagement positively fell off their chairs when it was revealed that Prince George received a bedtime pass in order to meet with the Obamas and thank them personally for the rocking horse they gifted him at his birth. The “Cheeky Little Monkey” looked fresh from the bath in a dressing gown and slippers.
Kate looked relaxed this evening, wearing the L.K. Bennett ‘Addison’ silk dress (which, sadly, is already sold out), with a navy blue belt and complimenting navy suede Rupert Sanderson ‘Malory’ courts. Catherine finished the look with tanzanite and diamond jewelry.
Earlier today, President Obama and Mrs. Obama were treated to a private lunch at Windsor Castle with the Queen and Prince Philip. Mr. Obama admitted to the press that he was keen to wish Her Majesty a Happy 90th Birthday in person.
