With the changing of the seasons, there is an inevitable itch to freshen up one’s look. Call me a chicken, but my haircut is not the first thing I look to change – too much time to grow out if I don’t care for the results (many Kate watchers would argue that the Duchess herself had such a case of buyer’s remorse with her short-lived bangs). And if you’re looking to maintain a classic, versatile wardrobe, dropping a paycheck on some on-trend clothing might not be the way to go either. When I am in the mood to try something new with my look, new cosmetics are my go-to for a quick, low commitment way to shake things up, and I think Kate would agree.
Shaking things up can be risky, though, when you have to look your best. Looking at how the Duchess has refreshed her makeup routine offers some helpful tips at how to refresh your own look while still looking princess-perfect.
Get a Lesson
Kate famously chose to do her own make-up on her wedding day, but she went about it the right way and got some lessons from a pro! According to rumours, Catherine consulted with Bobbi Brown artist Hannah Martin, who helped her select shades and gave her application tips for her big day. Most cosmetics brands and boutiques will offer colour matching and lessons with a minimum purchase. But even if you’re on a budget and can’t spring for department store brands, myriad make-up tutorials are available for free on YouTube (including some from the Duchess’s own makeup artist)!
Practice!
Even with the best tools and guidance, it’s impossible to create a professional look on the first try. Did you love Duchess Kate’s subtle winged liner at last week’s EACH gala (and before that at the Mandela premiere)? I’m willing to guess there were plenty of test runs behind closed doors in Apartment 1A before Her Royal Highness stepped out of her Jaguar or onto the red carpet.
Have fun!
Before you tie yourself in knots in the pursuit of perfection, keep in mind that the point of your new look is to inject a little fun into your day! If something doesn’t turn out quite as you hoped, pick yourself up, wash your face off, and start over again.
