When Kate arrives in British Columbia this weekend, she’ll not only be arriving in one of the most beautiful places on earth, but also one of the rainiest. With over 161 days per year of rain, Vancouver proper ranks as Canada’s third most rainy city, behind only two municipalities right near it. The forecast for William and Kate’s day is right now 18 degrees Celsius and overcast – but that definitely means that rain should factor into the equation of what Kate would wear – and do.
Luckily for us, Kate’s been caught in the rain many times before. Whether it’s been on Tour in New Zealand or just engagements around London (which has half the rainfall of Vancouver), she’s been spotted with umbrellas – and umbrella holders – many times before.
So what would Kate do when it’s raining? The answer is simply to continue on like it’s not!
While certain portions of itineraries have to be changed (like the visit in Cornwall just last week), the rain rarely impacts the engagements that Kate or William carry out. They simply get their umbrellas out and move on.
What kind of umbrellas, you ask? Most often, the answer is a Fulton Umbrella, the official holder of a Royal Warrant from the Queen. Their popular birdcage style umbrella, the clear one, is one we covered in more detail here. It was the one we saw at the War Horse premiere as well.
And Kate’s hair? More often than not, if rain is in the forecast or it’s already raining at the start of an event, Kate’s hair will be pulled back. Because she has naturally wavy hair (as do I), any amount of moisture is terrible for hair trying to be frizz free. Much like the humid climate of Tuvalu, where Kate’s normally perfect shiny, glossy locks got a little more curly than I’m sure she planned.
So while we hope the Royal couple gets a gorgeous weather day in Vancouver, it’s extremely possible they will be visiting on a rainy one. But don’t worry, Kate will be prepared – and I would not be even remotely surprised if her hair is pulled back.
