Every spring and fall, devout fashionistas worship at the altar of the newest, hot-off-the-runway trends. The trends that appear in designer’s collections work their way onto red carpets and eventually into stores that are accessible to everyday people. Kate no doubt has her eye on the fashion scene (especially since she is a part of it, setting trends and selling items out just by wearing them), but she is not a slave to fashion. Everything Kate wears is a conscious decision because she knows how many eyes are on her every time she leaves the house. With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to imagine whether Kate would wear some of the biggest spring 2017 trends.
Cold Shoulder
If you’re like me, you’ve seen this trend everywhere lately, including on Kate! Sometimes her styles surprise me (which is just one reason I love keeping up with them), and this one certainly did! I had not expected to see Kate wearing an off-the-shoulder look, but it worked perfectly on her. She’s got great shoulders to show off, and she kept the rest of her look elegant and modest—the perfect way to wear this trend.
Distressed-Edge Denim
There are a million ways to distress denim, and the current trendy way to do it is with a released or unfinished hem. It’s a much subtler way of distressing jeans than with large holes or rips. However, I do not expect to see this trend on Kate. All of the jeans we’ve seen Kate in are very polished and tailored, without a distressed detail in sight. She knows what works for her and, denim-wise, the clean-cut look works.
Block Heels
They’re comfortable, classic, and trendy this spring—what’s not to love? Kate is one to wear footwear appropriate to the occasion (with the possible exception of the five-inch wedges she wore to play volleyball), never shying away from a sneaker or a lower heel when it’s called for. We recently saw Kate wearing a plaid, low block heel in Canada, so I give this trend two thumbs up on her behalf. I think we’ll definitely be seeing Kate in more block heels in the months to come. Just like wedges (which we know she’s a huge fan of), they’re more supportive of the foot than a stiletto, making them perfect for the hours she spends standing, walking, and greeting people.
Visible Undergarments
This one’s easy. I can definitely predict that we will not be catching a glimpse of Kate’s undergarments anytime soon. On the runways and red carpets, we get lots of glimpses of bras, underwear, and bare skin, whether under sheer panels or all on their own. While there are certain things that a member of the royal family just will not be showing off, Kate has dabbled into wearing some clothing with sheer panels, showing just the right amount of skin to be trendy yet still classy. I expect we will see more of this from her in the future!
Romantic Details
Girly girls are having a moment. We’re talking floral, ruffles, embroidery—any and all feminine details. And I’m officially declaring Kate a fan. While, like many of these trends, I don’t think we’ll be seeing the Duchess in any extreme version (like this head-to-toe floral print), she’s absolutely on board with adding feminine details to her outfits. This trend works especially well on Kate when it’s used to add a feminine touch to an otherwise structured look, like a suit, blazer, or structured dress.
Kate always has a classic-yet-modern feel to her clothing. Knowing she will be photographed so much, this is done intentionally so she does not look dated or unfashionable in the years to come. Off-the-shoulder tops and block heels have come in and out of being trendy but are never out of style. That is likely why we have seen the Duchess gravitate towards these styles once they became more prevalent. Super-trendy styles that are likely to be here one day and gone tomorrow (meaning they will not hold up well to the test of time in photographs), like over-the-top distressing and extra-revealing looks, are not likely to be worn by the Duchess.
