The Royal Baby frenzy kicked off quickly this time around, with interviews, articles, and promotions coming out as soon as Kensington Palace hit the “tweet” button. On one of our conversations about the newest royal bundle, we were asked an interesting question: why should we care about the royal baby?
As royal watchers, the question initially did not compute – how could we not care?! It’s a royal baby! But then we paused and wondered, why is a royal baby so wonderful? Why should we care?
“I think people are excited because we live in a time of tremendous political uncertainty and economic challenges,” says WWKD editor, Amanda Dishaw. “The news of a baby is exciting because the Cambridges are a tremendously popular family and the announcement of happy news allows us all to forget the bad things happening in the world and be reminded that good things happen and are worth celebrating.”
Fashion news contributor Christina feels more connected to Kate. “I would say because it gives us more chances to see Kate as just Kate, not just royalty and we can relate to her more.” We are able to get to know normal-Kate, which is different from Duchess-Kate.
“The idea of following Kate’s pregnancy style, the bets on the baby’s name, and the news leading up to the birth is a fun and light distraction from all the bad news.” says Bridget, WWKD contributor. “I think that’s why a lot of us like following the royals and other celebrity news in general: it’s a fun break from reality.”
Author and WWKD contributor Teri W. feels a touching legacy continues with each new baby. “I feel like this royal baby news is especially poignant, given that the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death was just a few days ago. She’s gone, but her legacy of kindness and compassion lives on in her children and her grandchildren.”
Teri continues, “a baby is always happy news, always something to get excited about. New life. New hope. New possibilities. I look at William, Harry, George and Charlotte, and I see Diana. I see all that she did to change not just the royal family, but also the world. I know we’ll see the same when this new baby arrives too.”
A light spot in a difficult world, a connection to someone we care about so much, a time for memories and legacies, and an excuse for a celebration – why wouldn’t we be excited about the new royal baby?!
