If there’s one thing we wish Kate wore more often, it’s a tiara. The fact that she only brings out the royal bling on rare occasions does make those moments more special, though. So special that we’ve pretty much got them memorized, and we’re prepared to look at them each in shimmering detail.
We’ve seen Kate in three different tiaras so far. We love them all, obviously. But just for fun, we’ve ranked them according to our favorites…
3. THE LOTUS FLOWER TIARA
This was the first tiara we saw Kate wear after her wedding to Prince William. We had to wait over two years for a glittery princess moment like this one, so when she wore the Lotus Flower tiara in December 2013, for the first time, we lost our royal-loving minds.
This tiara originally belonged to the Queen Mother, and before it was a tiara it was a necklace! After having it converted to a tiara, she wore it across her forehead in perfect 1920’s Jazz Age fashion.
Kate must like this tiara, because she wore it again in 2015 at a state banquet for the Chinese president.
2. THE CAMBRIDGE LOVER’S KNOT TIARA
Kate first wore this tiara on December 8, 2015, and the whole word sighed. Some of us even shed a sentimental tear, because this tiara was a favorite of Princess Diana’s.
We absolutely love that Kate honored Diana’s memory by wearing this tiara. She wore it again exactly one year later, on December 8, 2016, at an annual diplomatic reception at Buckingham Palace.
Originally commissioned by Queen Mary from Garrard jewelers in 1913, the Cambridge Lover’s Knot tiara is over a century old. But it’s still as gorgeous as ever.
1. THE CARTIER HALO TIARA
Or as we like to call it, Kate’s wedding day tiara.
We love that this tiara is called the “halo” tiara because we practically heard angels singing when we got our first glimpse of Kate on the day she married Prince William. She was breathtaking, head-to-toe. We hoped for a tiara moment on that day back in April 2011, and Kate certainly delivered.
The tiara Kate wore on her wedding day is made of diamonds and platinum. It was designed by Cartier in 1936 and was originally given as a gift from King George VI to his wife shortly before they took the throne. It was passed down to Queen Elizabeth II on her 18th birthday in 1944, when she was still Princess Elizabeth.
Queen Elizabeth II has never been publicly photographed in the tiara. In 1956, she loaned it to her sister, Princess Margaret, for her tour of East Africa.
Princess Anne also borrowed the tiara on occasion, but its most famous moment was the royal wedding on April 29, 2011. The queen loaned the tiara to Kate for her wedding day, and the newly-crowned duchess rocked it like a queen. We’re still swooning.
