Here at WWKD, we’ve spent the past few days doing what every other royal enthusiast with a Netflix account has been doing: binge watching The Crown Season 2. We can’t get enough. The history! The jewels! The corgis! Our hearts are royally swooning.
Given the show’s immense popularity, we can’t help but wonder if Netflix will extend its run long enough for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to make an appearance. (Please let this happen!) Granted, there are still a lot of decades that need to be covered before The Crown even gets to the Princess Diana era. But you never know. It could happen.
In the meantime, it’s fun to speculate about casting the royals who’ve yet to turn up on The Crown. Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip on the show, recently gave his thoughts on who should play Meghan Markle. (Spoiler alert: he chose Selena Gomez.) So of course we’re chiming in with our picks for casting our favorite duchess.
Here are our top 5 choices for who should play Kate on The Crown, assuming the show catches up to real life:
EMILIA CLARKE
Emilia Clarke’s performance in Me Before You convinces us she would be perfect as Kate. She was so full of charm in that movie. We think she’d definitely capture Kate’s fun-loving side, as well as the grace and poise of her public persona.
EMMA WATSON
Emma Watson was a perfect princess when she starred as Belle in Disney’s live-action version of Beauty & the Beast. We definitely think she’s got what it takes to play real life royalty.
MICHELLE DOCKERY
Anyone who’s seen even one episode of Downton Abbey knows that Michelle Dockery is THE BEST when it comes to playing titled British aristocrats. Granted, Lady Mary wasn’t as warm as we imagine Kate to be. But she had her Kate-like moments, especially in the early seasons with Matthew Crawley. Melt!
EMILY BLUNT
Emily Blunt can do anything. Period. Plus she’s gorgeous. She’s just one blow-out away from being a duchess herself.
LILY JAMES
We love the idea of Lily James playing Kate! She’s got Kate’s beautiful looks, plus that gorgeous accent. Best of all, she played Cinderella! And Kate gave us an unforgettable, real-life Cinderella moment when she married her prince back in April 2011!
So what do you think? Who should play Kate? Let us know in the comments below!
I feel they would have to cast some entirely unknown!
